I have come to a conclusion (albeit totally unsubstantiated):
Poetry seeks to convey the complex using simple language
Social science seeks to convey the simple using complex language
Poetry forces me to slow down and savor words - to delve into the messy world of metaphor and symbolism and understand the world in the abstract. Social science forces me to think quickly, analyze information and understand the world in precision. I love both, but right now, after reading too many scholarly journals, I could really use some poetry.

breaking out the 7th grade memorization of cheesy crapulance for you here:
whose woods these are I think i know
His house is in the village though
you would not see me stopping here
to watch these woods fill up with snow
my little horse must think it queer
to stop without a farmhouse near
between the woods and frozen lake
the darkest evening of the year
He gives his harness bells a shke
to ask if htere is some mistake
the only other sound's the sweep
of easy wind and downy flake
The woods are lovely, dark and deep
but I have promises to keep
And miles to go before I sleep
and miels to go before I sleep
<-- the only poem not set to music i ever memorized.
